Schladming, Austria

Schladming is known for its World Cup downhill racing and is a leading resort in the Steiermark area of Austria. The ski area now links four mountains in the ‘Schladming-4-Mountain-Swing’.

You will find two main gondolas, the city centre “Planai lift” and the “Planai West lift” in the western area of the town. Go for hotels near the city centre if you want easy access to after ski and shops and go for Planai West if you want a quiet, cosy area and no lift queues in the morning. The majority of trails are intermediate level red runs down through the thick forests. Experts have more limited choices, but there are the two World Cup runs and the year round ski area of the Dachstein glacier, about 20 minutes away.

Families with children should consider the little town Rohrmoos where you will have all the blue runs, ski schools and safe play areas just outside your doorstep. You can still reach the rest of Schladming ski area either by lifts or the free ski bus.

Note that you will only fint altitudes of around 2000 meters so snow coverage can be challenging in the pre-season and again later when temperatures run high.

Very nice, well functioning area with many red runs. Snow coverage/quality is not as stable as in areas with higher altitudes. And why the hell did they build the city and the main slopes in the shadows of the Planai mountain?? ? In the morning you should go to the far left, Hochwurtzen or reiteralm to ski in the sun. Anyway – overall it is a nice place and absolutely worth another visit!
